Tanzania has the most natural & pristine safari in Africa. Serengeti or the endless plains & Ngorongoro Crater are the two best safari destinations in Africa.

Tanzania
A perfect vantage point!

It is the country for genuine overland safari where you drive to the different parks in your own safari vehicle with your experienced driver/guide. Tanzania safari is very earthy and you can feel the sights and sounds of Africa. Tanzania is a vast country with very well developed safari destinations. Its safari areas can be broadly divided into: the Northern Circuit, the Southern Parks and the Western Parks.

The Northern Parks

Tanzania
Wildebeest getting ready for night action on the "endless plains" of the Serengeti

The mineral rich crater floor is covered by nutritious grasses, which attract herds of zebra, wildebeest, and several antelope species. The predators are dominated by a strong lion population; cheetahs are seen easily on the plains but leopards are elusive. The crater has the largest population of the endangered black rhino in East Africa.

This is a park with varied habitat and good game. It is an ideal stopover between the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti.

Serengeti or "the endless plains" in Swahili is arguably Africa's best safari park. If there is only one place to visit in Africa for safari, it ought to be the Serengeti. It is one of Africa's most beautiful safari areas. It has a staggering amount of game, some of it is resident in a particular area but most takes part in the annual migration in search of better feeding grounds.

Estimated numbers are about two million wildebeest, half a million zebra, hundreds of thousands of Thompsons gazelle, and tens of thousands of impala, Grants gazelle and many other antelopes.

Many of these herds migrate from one area of the park through a well-defined historical route up to the Masai Mara in Kenya and back again into the Serengeti. Seeing the migration live is a magical experience but you have to be quite precise with regards to the area of the park and the time of the year you plan to visit.

The Serengeti can be divided into the Southern Plains, Seronera, Western Corridor, Northern Area, Grumeti Reserve, Loliondo Reserve, and Maswa Reserve. Every area has its own charm and the migration goes through each area depending upon the time of the year.

The Seronera Valley in Central Serengeti is a very game rich area and has probably the highest concentration of lion and cheetah in all Africa.

The Northern Serengeti is one of the hidden jewels of African safari. The major portion of the Mara River flows through here and between late July and end October, you can get some fantastic migration viewing here. It is one of the highest quality safari areas in East Africa.

Like the Ngorongoro Crater, the tourist traffic especially in the Central Serengeti can be overwhelming but there are parts of the Serengeti, which have a minimal tourist impact and these areas can be visited along with the most popular parts to get a balanced experience.

Southern & Western Parks

Tanzania
A lion surveying his territory from the heights of a "kopje"!

It is Africa's largest game reserve and the northern part of the reserve has excellent game. It boasts of enormous herds of elephant and the largest population of buffalo in Africa, as well as several species of antelope including the rare sable antelope. Predators are well represented including large prides of lions, as well as leopards, cheetahs, and spotted hyena. It has a large population of the highly endangered wild dog as well.

It is famous for its unique motor boat safari on the great Rufiji River.

Selous is a great, private safari experience away from the crowded Northern Circuit.

Ruaha is one of the finest game reserves in Africa. It has a broad range of landscapes and habitats, and rich and diverse range of wildlife. Excellent sightings of elephant, lion, cheetah, leopard and wild dog. The quality of its camps and guiding is one of the best in Africa. Safari here is intense and you are rewarded with fabulous game viewing. Ruaha is a special place indeed!

Katavi is a wild and remote park in Western Tanzania. It boasts of enormous herds of elephant, and buffalo and excellent cat sightings. Here there is excellent lion and buffalo interaction and you could be lucky to witness lions taking down buffalo. The safari in Katavi is reminiscent of a bygone Africa with wide open spaces and very few camps and visitors. An unspoilt paradise for the lucky few!
