The Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is one of the last sanctuaries of the highly endangered mountain gorillas where 300 gorillas reside.
A close encounter with a mountain gorilla is an unforgettable experience.
The Virunga Mountains, where The Volcanoes National Park is located, straddles Rwanda, Uganda & DR Congo. The Volcanoes National park is home to almost one third of the world’s population and is a world heritage site.
Treks to view the mountain gorillas are well organized and structured with maximum 56 permits issued everyday to view any one of the 7 gorilla groups that are habituated to humans. The permits are expensive at USD 750 per person per day but they are the most important source of revenue which maintains the Park and preserves the gorillas in Rwanda.
You will be taken to a specific group of habituated mountain gorillas who are comfortable in human proximity. If you look into the eyes of a large silverback gorilla, he will stare back at you with all indication that he is a thinking, intelligent "person". This close and intimate encounter with mountain gorillas transcends any other wildlife experience!
In the case of mountain gorillas, unlike chimpanzees, they climb higher during the dry season and descend during the rains. Gorilla trekking varies from 30 minutes walk to a 2 to 3 hour trek. Sightings are almost guaranteed and most certainly if guests allocate two days to trekking the gorillas.
We invite you to experience this memorable gorilla trekking safari with Safari Africa.
