The Mahale Mountains Park in Western Tanzania is the best destination in Africa for chimpanzee trekking. It is home to about 1000 chimps.
Chimpanzee trekking is one of the most thrilling animal interactions in Africa!
The chimpanzees are relaxed near people which makes it possible to track them and observe them from very close quarters. The trek to reach the Mahale chimpanzees can vary from an easy 20 minutes leisurely walk to a strenuous 3 to 4 hours trek through the forest. During the dry season from August to October, the chimps come down to lower altitudes making it an easy trek to view these magnificent primates.
The setting for chimpanzee trekking is breathtaking. It is a stunningly beautiful location where verdant forested mountains plunge into powdery white-sand beaches and a crystal clear lake. This is pure magic!
At Mahale, chimpanzees are centre stage of course but it includes so much more such as forest walks, kayaking, swimming, fishing and sailing down the shoreline with sundowners.
The Greystoke Mahale, in Western Tanzania, one of the most renowned camps in Africa, is the place to stay.
